Latest Updates from Our Project:

BackerKit Surveys going out soon!
over 3 years ago – Tue, Sep 08, 2020 at 05:17:09 AM

Soon, you’ll receive an email from us with a special link to your BackerKit survey. It’s important to respond to your survey as quickly as you can since we need this information to fulfill your rewards.

You don’t need to create a BackerKit account to fill out your survey. When you receive the email with the survey, click the survey link to respond. Answer the questions about your reward preferences, provide shipping information where appropriate, and purchase add-on items if you like. You don’t have access to this survey link yet, but it will be available  soon via email!

After you respond to your survey, you can go back later and change your responses at any time before we close the surveys and get our final counts.

If you need to review your information or pledge status, you can return to your survey by clicking the link in your survey email or  requesting your survey link under "Lost your survey?" on our BackerKit project page at https://apex-magazine-2021.backerkit.com.

If you used your Facebook credentials to log in to your Kickstarter account, the BackerKit survey is sent to the email address you use for your Facebook account. If you have another email address that you prefer to use, please contact support at https://apex-magazine-2021.backerkit.com/faq.

Happy Labor Day!

30 Days of Excitement!
over 3 years ago – Tue, Sep 01, 2020 at 12:17:40 AM

The Kickstarter is complete.

Thanks to our 779 generous backers, $33,288 was raised. WOW!

It’s been an exhilarating process. Our funding goal was met in the first 5 hours. Then we locked in funding for a whole year. The Indigenous fantasists bonus issue became reality. And finally the international/translated fiction bonus issue sprang to life.

It’s been an exhausting process. Thank you to Lesley Conner, Maurice Broaddus, Shana DuBois, Hayley Dietrich, Andrea Johnson, Justin Stewart, KT Bryski, and Greg Fazekas for making sure the Kickstarter came together. It was a remarkably smooth project as far as Kickstarters go.

It’s been an encouraging process. To be embraced and supported by the genre community to this degree in the times we live is humbling and affirming. My team and I thank you for this opportunity.

What’s the next step?

Kickstarter will process payments during the next few days. In the next couple of weeks we’ll send out backer surveys (this is where you’ll have the chance to pick up more bookmarks and pins).

Lesley, Maurice, Shana, and I will start work on issue 121!

I Missed the Kickstarter and Want to Support the Zine

If you missed the Kickstarter but still wish to support Apex Magazine, there are several ways to do so. We sell recurring subscriptions here on our website. You can also back us at our Patreon account.

If you have any backer questions or questions in general don’t hesitate to reach out via Kickstarter or email!

A Flurry of News

Less than six days to go. This is when the sleepless nights happen as you worry over every aspect of your Kickstarter project. I was up at 5am! For some, that's nothing. For me, it's highly unusual. :)

Indigenous Fantasists

One of our favorite Apex Magazine projects of the past few years was the Indigenous Fantasists themed issue guest-edited by Dr. Amy H. Sturgis. That issue produced Rebecca Roanhorse's incredible Hugo and Nebula Award-winning "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience(TM)." That issue also contained Allison Mills's "If a Bird Can Be a Ghost", a fantastic story that the author expanded into the upcoming novel The Ghost Collector.

We're proud to have published groundbreaking work by some amazing writers.

And we hope to do it again.

Like before, we will invite a guest editor of Indigenous heritage to helm the issue and everything from the cover to the interior elements will be packed with content from creators of Indigenous heritage.

This issue doesn't count against your subscription. It will be free to all subscribers!

Funded for a Whole Year!

Since the last update we received funding for an entire year of Apex Magazine. That's approximately 36 stories! Speaking for myself, Lesley, Shana, and Maurice, we are incredibly grateful for the support you've shown the zine.

It feels good to be taking submissions again. It feels...right. Working on the website, acquiring stories, editing...it's all wonderful work and we're glad to be doing it again.

Spread the Love

I'd like to highlight a couple of outstanding projects by two guys who have been longtime supporters of Apex Magazine.

First up is Joshua Palmatier's publishing venture Zombies Need Brains: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/znb/new-sfandf-anthologies-from-zombies-need-brains

The second is Robert S. Wilson's Nightscape Press that is raising funds for the release of some nice looking hardcovers.  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia

Check out my fellow small press colleagues and if what they have interests you consider tossing them a coin. :)

Indigenous Fantasists bonus issue funded!
over 3 years ago – Thu, Aug 27, 2020 at 07:36:52 PM

BONUS ISSUE!

As of this morning we sit at $26,286. This means that the bonus issue of Apex Magazine focused on Indigenous fantasists will happen! We're excited to see what guest editor Allison Mills does with the issue.

There are 47 hours remaining and one last major stretch goal to hit. At $30,000 we will publish another bonus issue. This one will feature international/translated works and will be guest edited by Francesco Verso. We're pretty darn close to reaching the goal!

ABOUT THE MILESTONE REWARDS

I wanted to clarify a cool little fact about our milestone rewards. All the awards go out to EVERYONE regardless of your backer level and regardless of when you backed the project. They're our extra way of thanking you for supporting our Kickstarter.

ONE LAST PUSH

Since we're in the home stretch, now is the best time to signal boost. People love supporting successful projects. Copy and paste the following into Twitter and hit Tweet:
